How Five on a Bike make Videos for “Those Who Care”

Ownacarehome asked York Woodford-Smith, founder of Five on a Bike, what makes his video production company different?

It is my mission to change people's perception of what it is like to live in a care home. I have spent 6 years putting together the perfect team to serve the sector by creating fantastic, emotive and engaging video content.

The team at Five on a Bike have been working in the care home sector for over 6 years now and have filmed video tours, case studies and recruitment content for a range of care home home providers from the single care home, through to family and growing care home groups, to the larger corporate groups.

We believe there is a particular approach and understanding that is required for filming in care homes. This is an understanding that my team have developed after filming in over 100 care homes. We are always considerate of all parties involved, from being respectful and transparent about what we’re filming with care home residents, to keeping a flexible approach to the schedule of the day to account for all the planned and unplanned events that can occur in a care home environment.  We go out of our way to be as unobtrusive as possible, after all we are stepping into a person’s home.

“From marketing and recruitment videos for websites or social media, to internal comms, we’re passionate about bringing the world of care to the forefront and showcasing it in its best light.”

As a team we’re experienced with filming in many different working care environments, with real care professionals and their clients. We know how important it is to be friendly and flexible in our approach - whether we’re working with elderly residents or registered managers and their teams, talking about their fond memories, their aspirations or a particularly difficult situation they’ve experienced.

We aim to make the video production process as simple as possible, working to a tailored timeline and budget for the care home provider.

Here are some ideas for videos we know work for care homes:

Welcome Videos

In 2-3 minutes, let potential new residents and their family and friends get a feel for your home, from their home. Let them hear from the manager, other team members, residents and their families and friends about what they can expect from the facilities, the care and the atmosphere in your care home.

‘What it’s like to work here’ Videos

As care home owners and managers you can attract new team members with video content on your careers page or across social media. Allow potential candidates to hear stories from current staff, sharing what they love about their jobs, their career journeys and the opportunities that are available to people who work in your home.  They also get a glimpse of the care home environment demonstrating that your care home is a fantastic place to work.

‘Day in the life’ Videos

Showcase your activities team and all the fun events and entertainment that go on in your care home.  Show people that moving to a care home can be a place to start a new chapter, make new friends, learn new skills and take part in new hobbies.

What have you learnt from working with care home providers?

Through our experience with working with so many care home providers, we’ve learnt that showcasing the people that work or interact with the home is just as important as showcasing the home itself.  That’s why we developed the ‘Welcome’ video approach, as opposed to just video tours. Hearing positive comments about the atmosphere of the home and the care provided there is definitely something that makes a care home stand out when a care home seeker is looking online for a care home. Most people’s first impression of a care home will be from their online shop front these days and giving them the emotional hook to further consider the home is the purpose of our videos.

What’s next on the horizon for Five on a Bike?

The biggest new thing on the horizon for Five on a Bike is the launch of our TV advertising service. This new service will allow our clients to reach new audiences with the help of Sky Adsmart. Sky Adsmart allows you to leverage advanced data insights such as location, demographics, household affluence and even more, ensuring that you're only paying for your advert to be shown to the right people at the right time. This means that TV advertising can be cheaper than you think. As part of this offering Five on a Bike will handle everything from helping come up with the idea for the advert, filming and editing it, and then go through the process with Sky Adsmart to get it broadcast on TV.

Another thing we’d love to do at some point in the future is some kind of documentary project, maybe something along the lines of a guide to care homes for the public. It’s not something we have any concrete plans for but it’s something we’d love to do if the opportunity came about.

And of course, in addition to that, we’re always just striving to work with more and more care home providers, helping them enhance their digital presence and showcase the great work they do.

What are Five on a Bike’s long term business plans?

We’re very happy with where we’re at right now, working with great clients, who appreciate the work we do and benefit greatly from it. As I said previously, we’re always looking to work with new care homes and if the market allows, we’d also love to grow the Five on a Bike team. We’ve had a great track record for developing our team members from people with little to no video production experience to become expert video producers, managers and company directors and we’d love to bring in some fresh talent to the team and help them grow with us too.

As well as this, personally, I’m always on the lookout for new potential business acquisitions and would love to buy another company in the sector.

“Whether it's tours of care homes, resident testimonial videos, social media content, or recruitment, we have the technical and emotional experience to help your home achieve sustainable occupancy and staffing solutions.
